Disability Awareness Month- October 2019

In 1988, the United States Congress declared October as National Disability Awareness Month, to raise awareness of the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. The Counseling Center and Disability Services office will be celebrating our commitment to supporting students with their future goals and aspirations throughout the month.

The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act (ADAAA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 are legal mandates that protect individuals with disabilities to ensure equal access to admission, services, activities, facilities, and academic programs.

An individual with a disability, defined by the ADA, is a person who:

  • has a physical or mental impairment; or
  • has a history or record of such an impairment; or
  • is regarded as having such an impairment, which substantially limits one or more major life activities such as self-care, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, or learning.

Substantially Limits: Unable to perform or significantly restricted as compared to persons without such disability.

Major Life Activities include, but are not limited to, caring for oneself, seeing, hearing, eating, sleeping, walking, standing, lifting, bending, speaking, breathing, learning, reading, concentrating, thinking, communicating, and working.

According to the 2018 Disability Statistics Annual Report, the overall percentage of people with a disability of all ages in the US was 13.2%.
