Pre-Collegiate Students Explore Forensic Science

On October 15, October 22 and November 5, ten students from the STEP and Upward Bound programs at MCC had the unique opportunity to learn about forensic science through the Crime Scene Investigation Club. Under the supervision of STEP program advisor Ashley Simmons, students in the CSI club set up mock crime scenes and learn to collect and analyze evidence.

The CSI club is a way of “exposing them to forensic science in a way that’s not glamorized, like on TV,” Simmons explains. Students have the chance to learn about real forensic science techniques, including fingerprinting and using microscopes to examine evidence.

The CSI club meets on Fridays from 3:30-5 p.m.. The club currently consists of ten 9th and 10th graders, but there are plans to include younger pre-collegiate students later in the academic year. The next meeting will be Friday, November 12.
