Big names to highlight MCC baseball's Diamond Dinner

The Monroe Community College baseball program will host its second annual Diamond Dinner on Friday, Feb. 1. The event, dubbed “The Best in Rochester Baseball,” will honor some of the finest players and coaches from Rochester.

The evening’s featured guest will be Tim Redding, a 1998 MCC alumnus who currently plays for the Washington Nationals.  The former NJCAA All-American will have his No. 17 jersey retired, making him the first MCC athlete to receive this honor.

Other guests include former Rochester Red Wings manager Joe Altobelli, former big league pitcher Johnny Antonelli, and MCC’s first head baseball coach, H. David Chamberlain.

Altobelli managed parts of seven seasons in the major leagues and won a World Series with the 1983 Baltimore Orioles.  He spent 10 seasons as a player and manager for the Red Wings. Antonelli won 126 games over 12 years in the majors.  He earned a win and a save in the New York Giants’ sweep of the Cleveland Indians in the 1954 World Series.

As MCC’s first head coach, Chamberlain is the pioneer of the MCC baseball program. He compiled a 735-232 record from 1964-1996 and was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1996.

The event will start with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m. followed by dinner. It will take place in the Warshof Conference Center in the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center, 1000 East Henrietta Rd. Tickets are $50 per person, with proceeds going to the MCC baseball program.  To reserve a ticket, contact associate athletic director Skip Bailey at 585-292-2833.
