Auditions for The Love of the Nightingale

On April 20, 21, 27 and 28, The Sixth Act will be staging a production of Timberlake Wertenbaker's THE LOVE OF THE NIGHTINGALE.  The play is based on the Greek Philomele myth, in which Philomele's brother-in-law, Tereus, rapes her and cuts out her tongue in order to silence her.  It is a dark, evocative play modeled after the classic Greek dramas, which not only addresses the issue of violence against women, but also explores the seemingly unrelated ideas of enforced silence, artistic expression, and imperialism.  The cast is large, with 9 men and 11 women, so the Sixth Act will be holding auditions in order to fill the roles.

The performances noted above will take place at 8 PM in the Black Box theatre at Brighton.  The show will begin rehearsing 2-3 days per week early in the spring semester.  During the 2-3 weeks immediately before the first performance, rehearsals will be held more often.  Most rehearsals will begin in the late afternoon (3-4 PM) and last from one to two hours.  Technical and dress rehearsals are scheduled for 7 PM during the week prior to performance.  Rehearsals will take place on the Brighton campus.

If you are interested in acting in this play, please come to one of the auditions in early December.  They will take place at 3:30 on December 4 and 5 in room 11-302.  People will simply be asked to read from short sections of the script, so the process will be informal, and there will be no need for any previous preparation.  Faculty, staff, and students are all welcome to participate.

The play will also require several people to help out backstage, so if you are interested in participating in a technical and/or supportive capacity, please contact Matt Fox at extension 3138, or email him at HYPERLINK "mailto:mfox@monroecc.edu"mfox@monroecc.edu.

We hope to see you there!
