Robert A. Sanders, Geology (Retiree)

The college family is saddened by the passing of Robert “Bob” Sanders on September 18, 2012. Mr. Sanders is credited with initiating geology studies at MCC.

An Army veteran, Mr. Sanders earned his bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Connecticut in 1952 and earned his master’s degree in geology from Syracuse University in 1957. During his studies in Syracuse, he found “talking about geology more stimulating” than being a geologist and focused his career on teaching.

Prior to joining MCC in 1965 as an assistant professor of geology, Mr. Sanders taught earth science in Connecticut at the high school level. According to former MCC Department Chairman Thomas Grasso, Mr. Sanders was known for his “superb intellect” and his love of his subject and students. He led field studies trips in Monroe County for MCC students and his fellow geologists across the state. He achieved the rank of professor in 1975 and retired from MCC in the mid-1980s. He also taught geology as a member of Operation Friendship, a youth exchange program between European and American families.

Mr. Sanders was predeceased by ex-wife, Mary (Laveck) Kirchner; siblings, Mildred Russo, Pauline Edelsten, Harrison Sanders and Richard Sanders. Friends may call at Jennings, Nulton & Mattle Funeral Home, 1704 Penfield Road, from 5 to 8 pm this evening, September 21 (private interment). His family asks that donations in his memory be directed to MCC’s General Scholarship Fund at the MCC Foundation.
