Beyond the Formula Statistics Conference

On July 24 and 25, educators from over 50 institutions spanning 13 states and two countries will gather at MCC’s Damon City Campus for the seventh annual Beyond the Formula Statistics Conference, designed to educate math teachers on new and creative ways to teach introductory statistics.

When he is not riding his Honda Magna motorcycle, singing in a barbershop quartet, or chasing around his two children, conference keynote speaker Paul Velleman is teaching statistics at Cornell University – a job he has held since 1975. He has an international reputation for innovative statistics education and has authored several books on the subject, including the new advanced placement statistics text, Stats: Modeling the World. He is also the author and designer of the multimedia statistics CD-ROM, ActivStats, for which he was awarded the EDUCOM Medal for Innovative Uses of Computers in Teaching Statistics, and the ICTCM Award for Innovation in Using Technology in College Mathematics. Velleman is a fellow at the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Many of the speakers scheduled to give workshops at the conference are considered to be world-class statistics educators. The sessions will address classroom teaching strategies, assessment strategies and new computer and Internet tools to enhance student learning.
