Thiem Foundation Awards $30,000 for Nursing Scholarships

The Alvin F. and Ruth K. Thiem Charitable Foundation recently awarded a $30,000 grant to support nursing scholarships at Monroe Community College. The grant was secured through Building on Success: The Campaign for Monroe Community College, an effort designed to raise $10 million in private funds to benefit the community through education at MCC.

“The fact that some of the most visible leaders in our healthcare community have already invested in MCC’s program validated our interest in supporting MCC,” said Richard O’Connor, Esq., Thiem Foundation president. The Thiem Foundation was established in 1992 and its grants support educational, health care, religious and other initiatives.

MCC’s Nursing program has graduated over 3,600 students since its inception in 1961. The program was recently expanded to graduate an average of 130 nursing students per year. MCC consistently graduates more than all of the other nursing programs in Monroe County combined.

Students must rank in the upper 25 percent of their class in order to qualify for the Thiem scholarship. The first scholarship will be awarded in August 2004.
