Rochester AmeriCorps to Host Visual Artist Robert Shetterly

Rochester AmeriCorps’ 45 members convene monthly for Member Development Day, a full day of professional development workshops and reflection activities that inform and contextualize their 50 week term of service. This month we are excited to be hosting internationally acclaimed visual artist Robert Shetterly, best known for his series of works and book, Americans Who Tell the Truth. The collection of portraits started in 2001 as a reaction and response to the terrorist attacks on 9/11, pairs striking portraits with original quotes of inspirational Americans including subjects like Martin Luther King Jr., Rachel Carson, and Dorothea Lange. The portraits engage the viewer with an unflinching style and provocative quotes like that of Rosa Parks, “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”

Robert will join the members on Wednesday December 10th to speak about his work and to facilitate a discussion about how we can contribute to the chorus of impassioned individuals that speak with truth and conviction to influence positive social change. As part of the workshop members will be creating self-portraits that include personal quotes that express their relationship to our American experience.

Individuals interested in learning more about the artist and seeing his work can visit his website: https://www.americanswhotellthetruth.org/.
