Extremely Important – Significant Financial Aid Course Eligibility (FACE) Changes. Please Read!

Effective for Spring 2017 registration, there are many changes that will affect students receiving financial aid (and how to advise students):
1)     Transfer credit- accepted transfer courses* will be counted toward a student’s MCC degree and will no longer be removed for FACE.  Transfer courses will be treated the same as all other courses in a student’s degree audit toward meeting the MCC degree requirements.
2)     COS/REA courses - will only be aid eligible if they fit into the student’s MCC degree requirements. An option for students that do not have elective credit as part of their requirements could be to take 12 credits that apply to their degree program in addition to the COS/REA course.
3)     Prerequisites - financial aid will no longer pay for (credit bearing) prerequisites. If a course is not required in a student’s major, it will not be eligible for financial aid. IE. MTH 165 and MTH 175 (prerequisites to MTH 210) will no longer be eligible for financial aid for a student in Engineering Science that requires MTH 210.
4)     Imputed credit (ex. ALL TRS, MTH 096, 098, 099) - non-credit (or imputed credit) courses WILL continue to be eligible for financial aid (to a maximum of 30 imputed credits for Federal aid (PELL/loans)).
New York State aid (TAP/APTS) does not have a limit but a student needs to be in credit bearing courses as well – 3 credits toward their degree plus 9 imputed credits count toward full time (12) for their first semester. After this, they need to have 6 credits each term for fulltime NY aid.
5)     Last Term Exemption – the last term exemption will no longer be eligible for Federal Aid (PELL and loans). Last Term Exemption will still be available for New York State aid (TAP/APTS).
The College determines FACE compliance by looking at CAPP “behind the scenes” (not Degree Works). You have access to this via self-service Banner. FACE CAPP is under the Faculty tab – FACE Administration and CAPP Archives. Click on Previous Evaluation on the bottom and look for the BLUE FACE CAPP on the compliance.
We realize these changes are momentous. We will all need to work together to assist our students with these changes in practice.
For questions, please contact FACE at 292-FACE (3223) or face@monroecc.edu <mailto:face@monroecc.edu> . The FACE Team will respond as quickly as possible.
