The Democracy Commitment Hosts "Deliberative Dialogues" Training

The Democracy Commitment (TDC) at Monroe Community College hosted, through the generosity of the prestigious Kettering Foundation, a train the trainers program entitled "Deliberative Dialogues".  The full day training, on February 10th, was held in the Forum, Flynn Campus Center.  TDC co-chairs Professor Joseph Scanlon and Professor Dina Giovanelli (AHPS) were grateful to Alberto Reyes-Olivas (Arizona State University) and John Theis (Lonestar College) for the high quality, engaging workshop.  In all, over 2 dozen trainers, comprised of students, staff, faculty, and administrators learned tools to help them become moderators on topics that could be polarizing in our current society.  The tools used in the training will allow select trainers to host forums in the future.  These forums will be advantageous to our college and the larger community by encouraging greater civility in political and democratic discourse.  Professors Scanlon and Giovanelli will be planning a deliberative dialogue around the issue of poverty for later in the spring semester.
