Changes to Placement and Testing Policy

In the spring of 2012, the Academic Policies Committee, with the help of the Testing and Placement Committee, revised the language of Faculty Senate Resolution 1.1.10, which deals with the testing and placement of incoming students.  The revisions were approved by the Faculty Senate on May 17th, 2012.  Most of the changes were made for the purposes of clarity and brevity.  A few changes are worth noting.

·         All students without the prerequisite mathematics course must have a placement level before they can register for a mathematics course. Students with recent high school backgrounds will be placed into levels six through ten and may elect not to take the Placement Test. Others will be required to take the mathematics placement test to determine a placement level.  Revisions to math placements of Levels 5 and lower are no longer permitted.  Students who question their placements may be referred to the Mathematics Department.

·         Revisions to reading placements and recommendations are no longer permitted.  Students who question their placements may be referred to the ESOL/TRS Department.

·         Students who are placed in developmental English courses must complete these courses with a grade of C or better before beginning any course designated as writing-intensive (WR). Departments offering WR courses may establish hard prerequisites in Banner.

The Academic Policies Committee and the Testing and Placement Committee hope that these changes will clarify and improve the testing and placement process at MCC.  Questions may be addressed to Matt Fox, Chair of the Testing and Placement Committee, or to Ed Grissing, Chair of the Academic Policies Committee.
