Asbestos Abatement

As you know from previous notices, asbestos abatement work on the second floor of Building 1 is scheduled to begin next week in conjunction with the Campus Center construction project.  It has been our experience that one of the products used in this process can produce a chlorine like smell and you may notice this odor as the abatement process proceeds.

This product is a cleaner used to remove mastic (adhesive) from concrete floors.  This product is named:  Neugenic 4175.  It is a semi-aqueous cleaner and it is known to be the safest available product for this type of work.  Although you may smell chlorine, chlorine is not a part of this product - it just smells like it.

The contractors will be ventilating their work area and the college ventilation units will also be operating to remove the odor.  Copies of the "Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for this product are available to anyone who requests them.  Contact the Safety Office at extension 3150 or via e-mail at mgilmore@monroecc.edu for this purpose.

According to the manufacturer and as confirmed on the MSDS, the product is not hazardous.  It is the lowest odor solvent available for this type of work.  However, some people may find the odor more unpleasant than others.

As always, we appreciate your continuing understanding and cooperation as we enter the last stages of this significant construction project.
