Hurricane Relief, Service-Learning, and You

The destruction of hurricane Katrina has devastated hundreds of communities.   The good news is….EVERYONE can help.  Every discipline can do something to answer the call to service.  Remember we all have a role to play in helping our fellow citizens rebuild their lives.  Please consider integrating a service project into your course that will make a difference in the lives of others.

Below are links to the Red Cross and FEMA Web sites.  Both have information about specific needs and how you can help with relief efforts.  Can’t find any ideas?  Your best resources are your students.  Ask them how they can complete a hurricane relief project that relates to the course.  You’ll be surprised at the creative ideas you’ll get.

While we all like to be as planful as possible, these types of emergencies require us to be flexible to meet the dire needs of communities quickly.  The Office of Service-Learning will assist any faculty member with an idea for the Fall or Spring semesters.  Please feel free to contact Susan Bender at 262-1710 or email her at sbender@monroecc.edu.
