Upward Bound Enjoys the Break

Although we missed a day of break activities this year due to the record snowfall, our dedicated students arrived ready for some fun. This year we invited the Wegmans ZooMobile to come in and host a workshop on careers at the Seneca Park Zoo. Students learned about jobs in communication, veterinary care, and education. Not to mention, we got to meet the boa constrictor, Queenie. Afterwards, we watched the movie “Selma.” This historical drama followed the Civil Rights Movement to Selma, Alabama where Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference led 2,000 people from Selma to Montgomery in order to end the racism attached to voting laws. On Thursday we were visited by a fellow Rochester AmeriCorps member, Shaq, to learn about slam poetry. The students immediately clicked with Shaq, who was then able to get some students to leave their comfort zones and share personal poems that they wrote with the group. Finally, we set off for Sky Zone, the indoor trampoline park! Here we got to jump our hearts out. Some students even won discount tickets in a dodgeball game against a Sky Zone staff member.
