An Outstanding Welcome (Sign) at Information Desk

When you walk past the Information Desk in the Peter A. Spina Administration Building, you can’t help but notice a beautiful welcome sign hanging on the wall. The beauty is in the characters and letters that spell “Welcome” in 28 different languages, from Amharic to Vietnamese.

Creation of the sign was a college community-wide effort.

Joyce Medwin, who provides assistance at the Information Desk, conceived the idea and presented it to fellow members of the Diversity Council’s Strategic Direction 5 committee. The group supported it wholeheartedly and enlisted help from the college community. Students from several of Suzanne El Rayess’ ESOL classes assisted by writing the word in the different languages. Ellen Gozik designed and laid out the sign, and Facilities did the framing.

Everyone worked together to see the project through completion and achieve one of the college’s strategic goals: to enhance the physical environment and promote diversity at MCC.

Chaired by Toni Robbins, the Strategic Direction 5 committee consists of Joyce Medwin, Carol Battles, Robert DeFelice, Rosanna Condello, Suzanne El Rayess, Kathy Farrell, Christine Fogal, Silvia Lavin, Amanuel Malik, Ervina Malin, Remegia Mitchell, Shahin Monshipour, Janet Waasdorp and Linda Ziegler.
