Visiting Playwright Hilary Bettis

MCC's Creative Arts Committee, in collaboration with the English/Philosophy Department and The Sixth Act, is thrilled to welcome esteemed playwright Hilary Bettis to campus THIS FRIDAY at 10 AM.

Bettis's play The Ghosts of Lote Bravo, which is set in Mexico just on the other side of the United States border, employs both English-language and Spanish-language, as well as magical realism and the supernatural, to levy a heavy critique of the violence (especially towards women) encouraged by post-NAFTA maquiladores. Although set in Mexico and informed by her family's experiences at the border, Bettis claims in an interview with American Theatre to have written her play "with an American audience in mind."

The event flyer is attached, and Bettis's bio is listed below, along with the zoom link and another link to a special recorded scene performed by current and former MCC students. Please contact Maria Brandt at mbrandt@monroecc.edu with any questions you might have.

We'd love to see you and your students on Friday!
