An Evening With Prof. Otero and the MCC Upward Bound Male Leadership Group
Doing what he does best, Professor Chris Otero led a phenomenal discussion on personal responsibility before a self-defense workshop on Oct. 16 for the MARK (Men Advancing, Raising Knowledge) group at MCC Upward Bound. The evening began with dinner and a discussion around male and female relationships and how men can contribute to making the world safer for women. A few students opened up about difficult conversations they experienced with women around assault and what they learned from those interactions. "As a guy, it's really important to know your limits and control yourself in relationships with females" noted senior Gammachis. "I think it's really important for us to discuss that as a group of guys."
Following dinner, the group headed up to the Dance Studio and learned a variety of simple and strong self-defense techniques. They went over how to disarm a punch, pin down an attacker, and prevent blows to the head. "I had an awesome time!", shared sophomore Dwayne. "The moves were a ton of fun, and I liked getting to actually practice them on people."
Thank you Professor Otero for leading a great evening, and for volunteering your time yet again. Professor Otero has led three total self-defense workshops for our group, and the MCC Upward Bound males appreciate his leadership!
