Celebrate Poetry Month with Spoken Word Artist, Taylor Mali

Campus Activities Board presents Taylor Mali, as seen on HBO’s, DEF POETRY JAM, who will be in the FORUM, 3-130 on Monday, April 26, 2004, 11:00 am – Noon.

Performance poet Taylor Mali is arguably the most successful poetry slam strategist of all time, having lead six of his seven national teams to the finals stage and winning the championship itself a record four times.  A native of New York City, Mali was one of the original poets to appear on the HBO original series "Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry."

A vocal advocate of teachers and the nobility of teaching, he spent nine years in the classroom teaching everything from English and History to Math.  His one-man show, "Teacher! Teacher!" about poetry, teaching, and math, won the jury prize for best one-man show at the 2001 U. S. Comedy Arts Festival.

The narrator of several books on tape, including "The Great Fire" (for which he won the Golden Earphones Award for children's narration), Mali is also the author of several books and cds of original poetry and spoken word including, “What Learning Leaves” and “Top Secret Slam Strategies”. CONVICTION, his first live CD in eight years, was released in September of 2003.
