Student Health Insurance Re-visited

Recently we told you about a new health insurance program for students enrolled in 9 credits or more. From the phone calls and e-mails we have received, it is clear that we did not do all we could to communicate with students and employees about this new fee in a clear and timely manner.  For this reason, we will not implement the health insurance plan and the associated fee in the fall 2010 semester.

Please understand that we still believe strongly in the merits of the health insurance plan and the benefits that it offers for assuring and improving student health and wellness—two factors essential for student success.  So, beginning this fall, we will engage the college community in a discussion about the proposed plan, a dialog that will provide you with clearer and more specific information about the health insurance fee and that will provide us with the opportunity to listen more carefully to your concerns.

The $120 fee will be removed from student bills, which will be recalculated factoring in the previously-required accident insurance fee. Residence hall students, student-athletes, and international students will still be required to have health insurance, as they have in the past. Nursing students in clinical courses also will be required to have health insurance, a new requirement from our clinical sites.

Thank you for your interest and your commitment to students.  I look forward to renewing the discussion on this topic in the fall.
