First Amendment Free Speech Panel will be streamed to Downtown Campus

The Right of Free Speech: How Broad Is it?

Over the past year, the First Amendment and rights to free speech have taken center stage on college campuses across the country. Protests of controversial speakers, bans on offensive books and dedicated zones for student activism have become common occurrences. Just how far do legal rights of expression go? And what, if anything, can anyone on campus, from students to employees, actually do when they hear, read or see messages they find deeply offensive?

In conjunction with recent campus forums on diversity and to explore the legal perspective, a panel discussion titled Right of Free Speech: How Broad Is it? will be held on Wednesday, November 8th, 12:00pm - 1:00pm in Monroe A and B. The program will be live streamed in Room 400 at the Downtown Campus. The entire college community is invited.

This panel will help to clarify the relevant law on the First Amendment and take questions from the audience. Panelists include:

* Bobby Colon, General Counsel, RIT;
* Monica Barrett, Attorney with Bond, Schoeneck & King, counsel to MCC; and
* Scott Forsyth, Counsel to the Genesee Valley Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union.

On Wednesday at noon, click here to view the panel discussion.
