More New Initiatives for the Writing Center

The Writing Center will be adding three more initiatives to support the academic needs of students:  Saturday tutoring hours, appointment tutorials and the Writing Center Faculty Referral Form.

Saturday Tutoring Hours

The Brighton Campus Writing Center will offer walk-in tutoring on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. beginning Saturday, October 28 – December 16, 2006.

Appointment Tutoring Begins

Thirty minute scheduled tutoring appointments will be offered at the Brighton and Damon Campus Writing Centers.  Scheduled appointments will begin effective Monday, October 30th.  Students should plan ahead for scheduled appointments by making their request known to the Writing Center staff.

Faculty Referral Form

The Faculty Referral Form will allow faculty to provide the writing tutor with specific feedback regarding the student’s tutorial need(s).  The Faculty Referral Form is packaged as a tablet with multiple copies of the form.  Faculty may refer students to the Center by indicating a specific request on the form.  The student will bring the form to the Center and request assistance.  Forms will be placed in faculty mailboxes in the immediate future.

Mission Statement

The Writing Center’s purpose is to guide students through the writing process and to provide support for faculty who assign written work.  Tutoring sessions at the center are interactive discussions that encourage students to make informed decisions about their writing.  The outcome of tutoring should be that the writer, not necessarily a specific piece of writing, will be changed.  Tutors will not write, re-write, or line-edit any portion of a student’s paper.  Rather, they will assist with pre-writing, drafting, researching, revising, and editing.  Most importantly, the Center aims to build students’ confidence and improve their writing skills.
