STEP Students Attend the SNMA Pre-Medical Conference at University of Rochester

Facilitated by the Student National Medical Association, Inc. (SNMA), the Pre-Medical Conference is designed to bring awareness to the career opportunities in the medical fields.  MCC STEP students had the opportunity to attend this conference at the University of Rochester and gain valuable insight to prepare them for careers in medicine. The students interacted with medical students and learned about the pathways that can lead to medical school. Students were also able to have small group conversations with doctors and researchers.

In one of the laboratories, students participated in a simple surgical suturing. Afterward, the STEP students were excited and felt very accomplished. An 11th grade student stated that “Up until now, I didn’t think that I could be a doctor. Now, I know I can and I actually can see myself as a doctor.” Truly, this Pre-Medical Conference made a positive impact on the STEP students.

The purpose of the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) is to prepare secondary school students, who are either economically disadvantaged or minorities historically underrepresented, enter postsecondary degree programs in STEM, health or licensed professions. STEP has been at MCC for almost 30 years.
