Congratulations to the 2013 English and Philosophy Department’s Student Writing Award Winners


The Student Awards Committee is pleased to congratulate the following students on their excellent writing:

Rice Award for Best Essay


Kathleen Fagan won 1st place for her essay “Salt of the Earth.”
Joshua Daniels won 2nd place for his essay “The Unreality of Sacred Speech: The Rebellion against the Logarchy.”

Cooney Award for Best Literary Essay


Annie Stevens won 1st place for her essay “Sarah Waters: Pushing the Boundaries of LGBT Fiction.”


Cloos Susskind Award for Best Poem


Lacey Pruitt Thomas won 1st place for her poem “Phylogeny.”
Sophie Hatch won 2nd place for her poem “Bygone Romance.”

Langlois Award for Best Short Fiction


Nichole Whyland won 1st place for her story “Stained Leaves.”
Annie Stevens won 2nd place for her story “The Stranger.”

Shaw Award for Best Essay


Tony DeMarco won 1st place for her essay “The Art of Companionship: How an Animal Saved My Life.”


The McMurray Award for Best Philosophical Essay


Amanda Piccarreto won 1st place for her essay “Head Games: Conceptualizing Judith Butler’s Idea of the Materiality of Sex in Bodies that Matter.”

The Sixth Act recognizes the following students for their winning one-act plays:


Michael Robin won for his one-act play “Sweetie.”
Paige Janis won for her one-act play “Rain Dance.”
Emily Thalmayr won for her one-act play “The Prodigal Son.”
