Save the Date: International Education Week Events November 16 - 20!


International Education Week - a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education - features campuses around the country hosting events that “celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. . . and promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment.”  Read more at https://eca.state.gov/programs-initiatives/international-education-week/

See below for a list of events MCC will be hosting at both our Brighton and Damon City campuses.  Please contact the office of Global Education and International Services for more information or to have your students get involved.

BRIGHTON CAMPUS:

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16th from 11:50 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.
FLAGS OF THE NATIONS PARADE AND IEW KICKOFF
See the visual array of colors and pride as our students carry flags representing the nations our international and immigrant.  Students will be parading through the lower level of Building 3 into the Atrium as we kick off International Education Week.  Our new Provost, Dr. Andrea Wade, will be giving the opening remarks as well as introduce the anchor event – “Global Faces & Human Displacement Across the Globe” exhibit highlighting statistics, graphics, and general facts about the global context of refugees.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16th at 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. [THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED.]
A CONVERSATION WITH SALVA DUT AND LINDA SUE PARK
Hear the story behind "A Long Walk to Water" and the current story of the Lost Boys who returned to South Sudan to help build the newest country.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16th through FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20th
MCC GLOBAL FACES & HUMAN DISPLACEMENT ACROSS THE GLOBE EXHIBIT 
Take 15-30 minutes to walk among and read the display boards highlighting statistics, graphics, and general facts from the UN High Commission for Refugees report <ttp://www.unhcr.org/5399a14f9.html> , which provide some global context for understanding the MCC Global Faces photo exhibit.

Interspersed within the Human Displacement Across the Globe exhibit will be portraits of MCC ESOL students taken by Photography 101 students.  This exhibit gives a local, human face to the statistics, graphics and charts from the UNHCR report.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17th 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
SPEED TRAVEL AROUND THE GLOBE
Students get a sense of geography, culture and language as they interact with international and immigrant students in a format modeled on speed dating, all taking place in the Warshof Conference Center Empire Room.  Organized by MCC’s Global Union student organization.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18th 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
UNDERSTANDING THE GLOBAL REFUGEE CRISIS
KEYNOTE SPEAKER, ESKINDER NEGASH
Mr. Eskinder Negash, Senior VP for Global Engagement, U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants <
https://www.refugees.org/>  will speak on the global refugee crisis. Join us in the Warshof Conference Center Monroe A & B.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19th, 12:30 -1:30 p.m.
GO GLOBAL IN YOUR FUTURE! RESUME WORKSHOP
Students learn about global work, volunteer and intern options that will help develop cross cultural skills employers want.  Pam Lazio, career counselor, & Kara Tierney, chemistry professor & former Peace Corps volunteer, will engage students in this session to be held in the Career and Transfer Center Library. 

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19th, 12:30 -1:30 p.m.
FACULTY WORKSHOP – GLOBALIZE YOUR CURRICULUM
Susan Belair and Don Beech will facilitate an interactive working session, to be held in the LeRoy V. Goode Library 4-235, to help faculty explore further ways to globalize a specific course, and then get start with some concrete steps in this process.  There will be a pre-workshop reading and preparatory assignment, and a follow up workshop in January.  Bring your syllabus and roll up your sleeves for this working session!


DAMON CITY CAMPUS:

Celebrate our newly installed flags from around the world hanging in the Student Lounge and join us as we kick off our international education week events. This event is a celebration of our international and immigrant students hailing from 85 countries as well as the official opening of International Education Week at MCC.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 16th through FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20th
