MCC Student Awarded Prestigious National Scholarship

Ebony White, a recent graduate of Monroe Community College, has
been awarded the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship, one of only 40 awarded
nationally each year.

White, 26, of Rochester, is currently attending the University of Rochester
under the scholarship, which provides recipients with full payment of tuition,
books, room and board (up to $30,000 a year), plus a stipend for living
expenses. To keep the award, students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average.
The scholarship is awarded to select students who show outstanding academic
achievement and demonstrate a high level of involvement in co-curricular
activities. Students must also submit an essay based on a topic selected by the
Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.

While an MCC student, White was a student government association senator,
president of the Black Student Association and a peer advisor. "I've had some
time to let it sink in, but when they called to tell me I had won, I almost
fainted," White said. "I didn't know what to say, so I said thank you, but it
just didn't seem like enough."

White, who competed for the scholarship with students from across the country,
is working toward her B.A. in Anthropology and hopes to become an equal
opportunity representative.
