Media Cover East High College Readiness Project

Channel 8 (WROC), Channel 13 (13WHAM News) and YNN Rochester interviewed Kate Smith, interim dean of Interdisciplinary Programs at MCC, and Anibal Soler, principal of East High School, about the East High College Readiness Project.

Here's how the program works:
MCC is helping East High School students better prepare for college with the help of JPMorgan Chase Foundation.

This spring, MCC offered East High juniors a computerized placement exam that assesses their English and math skills. Based on the results, 24 students were selected to participate in an after-school program aimed at addressing gaps in reading, writing and math skills.

In December, they will retake the placement exam to measure their progress, with the goal of having them place at college level. Students who successfully complete the program and score well on the placement exam can enroll in college-level courses at MCC in spring, moving even farther along toward a college degree.

MCC faculty members Mary Ellen Gleason and David Shein provide classroom instruction at East High three times a week.
