Alumnus Honored, Criminal Justice Scholarship Launched

This morning, at the Damon City Campus (fifth floor lobby), representatives of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police will present the parents of New York State Trooper Andrew J. Sperr (1972-2006), an MCC alumnus, with the Medal of Valor.

The Monroe County Association of Chiefs of Police will also present President Flynn and the Monroe Community College Foundation with a check for $2,000 to establish a new criminal justice scholarship program at the college. Their initial gift is made in memory of Trooper Sperr.

As you may remember, Trooper “A.J.” Sperr was killed March 1, 2006 in Chemung County. He was a 10-year veteran of the New York State Police and an alumnus of MCC’s Law and Criminal Justice program (class of 1994).

The Medal of Valor is presented in honor of law enforcement officers who have made the ‘supreme sacrifice’ by giving their life in the line of duty. The medal reminds the families of law enforcement officers who were killed that “their extended family will never forget the contribution that they and their lost loved one have made to society.”

Scholarships will be awarded to criminal justice students who have a 3.25 grade point average and an interest in a law enforcement career. The first two scholarships will be awarded in spring 2007.
