MCC Receives Workforce Development Grant

Monroe Community College received $81,740 in workforce development training grants from the State University of New York (SUNY) as part of the state's recently announced $1.85 million job training initiative.

All 30 SUNY community colleges will receive a share of the $1.85 million. The grant funding is awarded each year to promote economic development, encourage the development of new business, and create additional employment opportunities.

MCC's Office of Workforce Development partnered with several area companies to apply for the funding. As a condition, employers must contribute 25 percent of their grant amount in matching funds. The College will use the funding to work with CooperVision to provide total quality management, interpersonal skills, and leadership skills training for 130 employees. MCC will also provide training for 125 Heidelberg Digital LLC employees in computer technology, supervisory skills, and lean manufacturing, and Schlegel Systems Inc. will send 370 employees to MCC for ISO quality training.

"The SUNY monies we have received over the past five years have benefited several local companies, including this year's recipients," said Dustin Swanger, MCC's associate vice president of workforce development and dean of technical education. "We work with the recipients to develop a year-long plan for training to increase their productivity, their overall business, or to create new jobs in the area as part of an economic development strategy."
