Mentors in Violence Prevention at MCC Updates

As our fall semester gets underway, Mentors in Violence Prevention at MCC (MVP-MCC) welcomes the College community back to what we hope will be a safe, peaceful and productive academic year!  MVP-MCC is our longest running violence prevention program and includes curriculum infusion into select courses, our three-day Train the Trainers certification, co- and extra-curricular programming, a competitive one year scholarship, and certified trainers who will work with your group or organization.  Our multicultural, social justice focused curriculum empowers bystanders to interrupt and intervene when faced with potential bullying, harassment and violence, especially gender based violence.

The MVP-MCC Leadership Team is a wonderful collaboration of Academic and Student Services.  Susan Bender (VaPA), Joe Sturnick (Law & CRJ) and I (AHPS) are on the Academic Services side and Tracey Britton, Ambika Howell, Michael Johnson and Vilma Patterson represent Student Services.  We also work with many community agencies and organizations.

This past summer, Joe Sturnick, Tracey Britton and I worked with both MCC Men’s and Women’s Soccer teams, providing a half-day introductory training on the extent of violence in our society, sexual assault prevention, affirmative consent and Title IX.

Joe Sturnick and I also traveled to SUNY Geneseo and facilitated our three-day Train the Trainers certification with student athletes, fraternities and sororities.  This was especially rewarding, as we worked with Chances and Changes of Livingston County, a domestic violence center, on this high-impact, effective Training.

We are currently updating our informational documents and will share them as soon as available.  We are also planning our spring 2017 Train the Trainers certification to be held March 15-16-17, 2017 on the Damon City Campus.  If you are interested in getting on our list for this or a future Training, please contact any of the Team members listed above.  To stay up-to-date on our events and activities, please join our Facebook group!

We may never prevent all forms of violence, but together, we can and are making a difference!
