The MCC women's basketball team will travel to Salina, Kan. for the NJCAA Division I national tournament next week. The Tribunes (27-1) are seeded fifth out of 16 teams as they gun for a national title in their first year at the Division I level.
MCC defeated Cincinnati State and Vincennes University to win the Region XII championship and followed that with a 98-47 victory over Highland (Ill.) CC in the District C title game Tuesday night to advance to the nationals.
The Tribunes had plenty of individual highlights in the win over Highland. Niki Avery scored a game-high 26 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the 3-point line and Trenise Fuller registered her first career triple-double.
Sophomore guard Maurita Reid finished with 17 points and also eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier for her career with a layup in the second half.
MCC will play Lake Region State at 12 p.m. next Wednesday. The championship game is Sunday at 1 p.m. The Tribunes have won the last two NJCAA Division II championships.
