MCC to Host National Physics Workshop

MCC and the Department of Engineering Science and Physics have been selected to host a meeting of the Physics Workshops for the 21st Century Project. Since 1991, this National Science Foundation-funded workshop series has held over 50 workshops in 13 states that have served well over 1000 two-year college physics professors.

The workshop, ISLE (Investigative Science Learning Environment) – Learning Physics while Practicing the Process of Science, will be held April 14-16, 2005. The participants in the workshop will learn how to modify introductory physics courses to help students acquire a good conceptual foundation in physics, apply this knowledge effectively in addressing problems of the real world, and develop the science-process abilities that scientists use in their real world work.

The workshop leader, Alan Van Heuvelen of Rutgers University, was the recipient of the 1999 Robert A. Millikan Medal from the American Association of Physics Teachers, the association’s highest honor. The local host of the workshop will be Paul D’Alessandris.
