Annual New York State Fire Inspection

The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control Fire Inspection will begin on Monday, March 5th, lasting approximately one week. Listed below are the most common types of violations we have received in the past:

  • PROPPED OPEN FIRE DOORS - All fire doors must be kept closed. Doors to rooms that are occupied may ONLY be temporarily propped open. The last person out of the room must close the door.
  • STORAGE OF COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS - Combustible materials (paper, cardboard, wood, etc.) must not be stored within 18 inches of the sprinkler head(s) or within 24 inches from a ceiling that does not contain sprinklers. Storage must be neat and orderly and not near ignition sources such as electrical outlets, lights, or heaters.
  • EXTENSION CORDS - Extension cords may only be used temporarily. "Temporary use" is defined as a finite amount of time, e.g., for a class period. Extension cords cannot be affixed to the building in any way using tape, tie downs or any other means that make them permanent. UL approved power strips or surge protectors that have a reset are not considered extension cords and may be used permanently. They must be plugged directly into a wall outlet and not into an extension cord or another power strip/surge protector.
  • APPLIANCES - Appliances such as coffee pots, toasters, refrigerators, microwaves, or any other equipment that draws a large amount of power should be plugged directly into a wall outlet. If a wall outlet is not available, an appliance may be plugged into a UL approved power strip if it is properly rated. The electrical rating of the power strip must be compared to that of the appliance, given in watts or amp. The appliance must not draw more power than the power strip is designed to handle. Only one appliance per power strip is allowed.
  • BLOCKED EXIT - Exits must not be blocked by items such as furniture or equipment, or snow buildup outside an exit door.
  • BLOCKED ACCESS TO EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT - Adequate access and working space must be maintained around electrical panels, electrical closets, fire alarm panels, fire alarm pull boxes, fire extinguishers, emergency eyewashes, and emergency showers.

Your assistance in reducing the risk of fire is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ray Sabourin at X3153.
