Students Strive to Create Legacy of Change

A program for MCC and the Rochester community organized by students at Damon City Campus - "Commitment to Community: Creating a Legacy of Change" - turned out a great success.

An estimated 175 people attended the program on Thursday, Nov. 8. In addition to the invited guests (Audrey Smith from Mothers and Friends of Murdered Children, Sen. Joseph E. Robach, RPD Deputy Chief Melvin Perez, and Pathways to Peace Director Victor Saunders) newly re-elected District Attorney Mike Green came and spoke to the students. A group called Slater's Raiders, which formed after the recent death of James Slater, a community activist and employee of Action for A Better Community, also came by to show their support.

I commend the students in our Human Service Club and our faculty who support them (including Faculty Advisor Paula Fahy) for their hard work on this program, and for their commitment to improving our community. This forum creates an opportunity for our community to come together to help address what is clearly a complex societal issue. The forum also generated a sense of universality of the problem of poverty and its affect on young people, instilled hope, and created ways community members can empower themselves to overcome the symptoms of poverty.
