Proposed Provisional Changes to Grading and Testing Policies

Faculty Senate has received the attached proposals from Provost Wade regarding provisional changes to policies. The proposal addresses changes to Spring 2020 grades as well as guidelines for student's placement into English and Math (ACCUPLACER testing is not available at this time). The three proposals up for a vote will be provisional. No permanent policy changes will be considered at this time.

We will be using the existing Senate Blackboard site for discussion of these proposals. ALL faculty and professional staff have access to this BB page. To access it, go to MyMcc --> Employees --> My Courses --> My Organizations (on the right hand side). You will see Faculty Senate - Academic Year 2019/2020. In General Information, you will find the proposal and three discussion threads. Each area for consideration will have its own discussion thread. The discussion threads are open to everyone, not just senators.

Due to volume and time constraints, we will allow for up to 2 posts per faculty member. Both senate VPs (MaryJo Vest and Elizabeth Baxter) and I will be monitoring the threads. In addition, the chairs of English/Philosophy (Tony Leuzzi), TRS (Matt Fox), and Math (Annette Leopard) will also be fielding questions when appropriate.

Senators will be voting on behalf of their constituents on Friday 4/3. Senators may use whatever tools they have to gather departmental votes. For example, AHPS will be using email.

Here are additional items and reminders to keep in mind:

  • The addition of the proposed grades is only for Spring 2020 - and they will be student options, not mandatory.
  • The placement measures are provisional.
  • We have been in direct discussion with administration regarding these time sensitive proposals.
  • Senators will vote on Friday. There will be three areas for voting: Grades, English placement and Math placement.

I again want to thank all Senators for their service on Faculty Senate. I am especially grateful to EC for working so diligently on your behalf. As I have said before, these are unprecedented times, but we think it is important for Senate to still have a voice in decisions made at this time. Stay healthy and safe.

Best,
