Starfish Insights:  Fine-Tuning our Approach

The Starfish Team is very excited about the level of participation in the first Starfish Student Academic Progress Report of the fall 2016 semester (53% response rate). There has also been an impressive use of manual flags, kudos, and taking attendance in Starfish--thank you for your participation!

We would like to share tips and answer FAQs received from our faculty, students, and success coaches.

Today’s tip: When to use the General Academic Concern Flag

The General Academic Concern flag is a way for you to voice a concern about a student directly to the school specialist/success coach in their network to determine what intervention is right for the student. This flag is a way for faculty to request the school specialist/success coach to check in with the student and probe a little deeper before suggesting an intervention. The school specialists/success coaches have a unique view of each student assigned to them as they see every flag and kudos a student has received. The school specialist/success coach will work with faculty to determine and provide an appropriate intervention then close the loop by entering comments in Starfish that are emailed to the flag raiser.

Today’s FAQ:  When should we NOT use a General Academic Concern Flag?

Although non-academic issues often prohibit our students from doing their best in our classes, how and where MCC employees document that information is critical. If you are concerned about a behavioral issue that goes beyond academic need, please use the Behavioral Incident Report (BIR). You can find the form online at https://cm.maxient.com/reportingform.php?MonroeCC&layout_id=1.

Please remember Starfish should only be used to report academic related issues.
