Men and Women's Swim Teams Continue to Dominate


MCC Tribunes Splash to Success in First Three Swim Meets

The MCC men's and women's swimming and diving teams are off to a great start, each with records of 4-0. Coach Daniel Dubois noted "the MCC swimmers are very fast for this point in the season and the experience against quality NCAA colleges will help our team prepare for our regional and national competitions later in the year." Following are recaps from the first three meets of the 2002-03 season.

MCC versus Mercyhurst Northeast and Erie Community College
On Nov. 6, 2002, the MCC Tribunes opened up the season at home with wins against Mercyhurst Northeast and Erie Community College. The Lady Tribunes scored 107 points while Mercyhurst scored 69 and Erie scored 15. Triple event winners for the Lady Tribunes included sophomore Urska Ros, who won the 200-yard individual medley (IM), 100-yard butterfly, and the 100-year breaststroke.

Double winners for the Lady Tribunes included freshman Leigh Anne Dubois in the 1000- and 500-yard freestyle. Freshman Andrea Crye captured first in the 200-yard freestyle. Sophomore Jillian Cowles won the 100-yard backstroke. The MCC relay team of sophomore Captain Denise Britton, sophomore Meghan Trexler, Crye and Dubois won the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Lady Tribunes are 2-0.

Freshman Michal Bogacki, sophomore Chris LaForest, sophomore Captain Yulong Lin and freshman Daniel Pratt won the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, to secure the win for the Tribunes. The final team score was MCC 106 points, Mercyhurst 102 and Erie 9. MCC Head Coach Daniel Dubois stated, "This was a important win as Mercyhurst is our strongest competition in Region III. The men really stepped up and won close races, which secured the win for the Tribunes."

Double winners for the Tribunes included Yulong Lin in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard breaststroke; and Michal Bogacki in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly. Adding wins for the Tribunes was Pratt in the 1000-yard freestyle and LaForest in the 200-yard freestyle. The men began the season 2-0.

MCC versus Alfred State and Jamestown Community College
Both teams cruised to victories in their second tri-meet at home on Nov. 16, 2002. The women scored 127 points, to Alfred's 35 and Jamestown's 13. On the men's side MCC scored 109 points to Alfred's 64 and Jamestown's 27. The Lady Tribune's won 10 of the 11 events in the meet. Freshman Karen Bucci, sophomore Robyn Mance, Crye and Dubois won the opening 200-yard medley relay. Individual event winners included Ros in the 1000- and 200-yard freestyle races and 100-yard butterfly, Britton in the 50-yard freestyle, Dubois in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard freestyle, Cowles in the 100-yard backstroke and Mance in the 500-yard freestyle. Crye, Britton, Bucci and Trexler finished first in the final event, the 400-yard free relay. The women improved their season mark to 4-0.

The men's squad won eight of 12 events. Individual event winners included Lin in the 50-yard free and 100-yard fly, Bogacki in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard backstroke, freshman Jeremy Post in one-meter diving, LaForest in the 100-yard free and sophomore Carl Yost in the 100-yard breaststroke. The relay team of Laforest, Pratt, Lin, and Bogacki placed first in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The men's team improved their season record to 4-0.

Southern Connecticut Invitational
The MCC Tribunes traveled to New Haven, Conn. on Dec. 6-7, 2002 to compete against quality Division II and III squads at the championship format Southern Connecticut Invitational. In an impressive fashion, the women's team scored 160 total points and finished fifth out of eight teams. Urska Ros won four individual events, including the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.60), 100-yard butterfly (57.72), the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.72) and broke her team record by over three seconds by winning the 200-yard IM in 2:11.90.

Other top 12 finishes included Denise Britton in the 50-yard freestyle (26.92; 9); Leigh Anne Dubois in the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.46, 9), the 500-yard freestyle (5:42.05; 9) and the 1650-yard free (20:06.39; 10); and Karen Bucci in the 200-yard backstroke (2:43.26; 10). Jillian Cowles, Lama Alsabai, Andrea Crye and Robyn Mance also competed and helped MCC score in relay events.

The MCC men scored 232 points and finished fourth out of eight teams. Individual event winners for the Tribunes included Michal Bogacki in the 200-yard butterfly, breaking a team record (1:59.47). Bogacki also swam the 50-yard freestyle (22.67; 6), the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.42; 3) and the 100-yard butterfly (53.28; 3). Yulong Lin won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.80) and swam to top 12 finishes in the 200-yard IM (2:05.17; 7), the 400-yard IM (4:28.87; 5) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.86; 2).

Other top 12 finishes for the Tribunes included Chris LaForest in the 100-yard freestyle free (52.01; 11), the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.49; 6), the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.09; 9); Daniel Pratt in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.23; 11), 100-yard backstroke (1:02.71; 8 and the 200-yard backstroke (2:17.76; 8); Matt Young in the 1650-yard freestyle (20:34.60; 7; Kevin Houck in the 1650-yard freestyle (20:38.52; 8); Tory Hillenbrand in the 1650-yard freestyle (21:56.25; 9) and the 400-yard IM (5:28.76; 12); and Carl Yost in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.33; 11) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.66; 10).
