Spring 2019 Diversity Conference: The Intersectionality of Women and Girls of Color and Mental Health

This past Friday, the spring 2019 Diversity Conference entitled, "The Intersectionality of Women and Girls of Color and the Impact on Mental Health and Well-Being" was held at the Downtown Campus in High Fall A/B. The keynote for the event was Dr. Stephanie Evans, Professor and Chair of African American Students, African Women's Studies and History at Clark Atlanta University. A special thanks also to our Conference Speaker, Ms. Sadie Fischer, who is a dynamic, highly sought after Queer, feminist, Latina speaker who is known for her energy and passion around social justice issues. Finally, thank you to the panelist who shared their own personal stories as African American women and how that experiences informs the work that they do. The panelist were: Dr. Lesli Myers-Small, Superintendent, Brockport School District; Ruth Turner, Chief of Student Support Services & Social Emotional Learning, Rochester City School District; Dr. Stephanie Geter, Clinical Psychologist, New Beginnings Psychological Services; and Peggy Harvey Lee, Director of Community Engagement and Single Stop, Monroe Community College.

The event was attended by over 100 college and community members and was the culmination of three events in a twenty-four hour period. One of those events involved the Rochester City School district, in which the keynote speaker, Dr. Stephanie Evans spoke to an audience of over 1,500 young women. Many thanks to all who made this event possible. A special thank you goes to Associate Professor Tokeya Graham, who served as the Mistress of Ceremony and to Professor Melany Silas who spearheaded this event.
