The issue of marijuana legalization has long been a hot topic debated by young and old, conservatives and liberals, individuals and organizations, state government and federal government. The issue has risen to the forefront again just recently as the Obama administration has just released new, less restrictive policies regarding the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.

Hear positions from both sides of the house during an event often referred to as the ‘great debate’ when Monroe Community College hosts “Heads vs. Feds: The Debate on the Legalization of Marijuana”.  This debate will feature a 35-year advocate of marijuana legalization and a DEA veteran.

Steve Hager got his start as a journalist when he began an underground newspaper, "The Tin Whistle," as a high school student in 1976. The newspaper grew to be distributed to four high schools in Illinois before it was banned. Hager went on to earn a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Illinois. In 1988, he became the editor-in-chief of High Times magazine, a publication devoted to ‘cannabis culture’ and advocating for its legalization. Hager continues in the role of editor-at-large for High Times and writes a monthly column for the magazine. Hager is credited with founding the Cannabis Cup, commonly referred to as the ‘Academy Awards of Marijuana’ and recently completed the first national hemp tour making him leader in the hemp legalization movement. He has authored several books including The Octopus Conspiracy and produced/directed several documentaries, including The Cannabis Cup by Koch Entertainment.

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) veteran, Robert M. Stutman, and Steve Hager will go round and round deliberating the myriad issues surrounding marijuana legalization during this well-balanced, interactive forum for students and the community.

Stutman, referred to as “the most famous narc in America” by "New York Magazine," retired in 1990 as the special agent in charge of the DEA’s New York Field Office, the DEA’s largest division. Stutman began his career as a street agent, moving quickly up the ranks, forming and leading the International Training Division from 1971–1976 before becoming the director of the Office of Congressional Affairs. In 1979, at age 36, Stutman become the youngest special agent in charge of the New England Field Division, eventually retiring from the New York Field Division in 1990.

During his 25-year career with the DEA, Stutman was a vocal proponent of prevention activities in drug law enforcement and is credited with bringing national attention to the crack cocaine epidemic. He is considered an expert in his field and has been the special consultant on substance abuse for both CBS and PBS as well as appeared on many news programs including 60 Minutes, 48 Hours, The Ted Koppel Show, Firing Line, Today and Good Morning America. His autobiography, Dead on Delivery: Inside the Drug Wars, was published in 1993 by Warner Books. Currently, Stutman operates The Stutman Group, a consulting firm that designs and implements substance abuse programs for more than 1500 schools, communities and corporations.

Campus Activities Board hopes to see you and your students at both of these exciting events!  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Rebecca Herzog, CAB Advisor, <mailto:rherzog@monroecc.edu>.
