Mentors in Violence Prevention at MCC Preparing for 5th Train the Trainers Program

The Mentors in Violence Prevention Program at MCC (MVP-MCC) will host its 5th Train the Trainers Program on November 7-8-9, 2013 on our Damon City Campus (DCC).   MVP-MCC professors, Susan Bender, VaPA and Joe Sturnick, Law & CRJ, will train about 25 current students, alumni, SUNY Brockport students and community members during this three-day Training, where participants will earn certification in this innovative bystander intervention leadership Program.

MVP was founded at Boston’s Northeastern University in 1993 by international violence prevention educator, Jackson Katz (jacksonkatz.com), and gifted to MCC after Katz’s visit to DCC in April 2008.  It is utilized in all branches of the U.S. military, many professional sports teams, college and high school athletics, and other institutions.  MCC is one of just three schools in the world - and the only community college - to host this transformational Train the Trainers, and our Program also includes curriculum infusion, an academic scholarship created by the MCC Foundation, and extra-  and co-curricular programming.  Over 120 faculty, staff, students and others have completed the Training, and many are utilizing their new skills to improve their communities.

Our spring Training will be held on March 20-21-22, 2014 and we are encouraging MCC faculty and staff to get involved as we further institutionalize this highly effective curriculum.  An official call will go out in due time, but if already interested, please contact any of the following MVP-MCC Leadership Team members:  Susan Bender, Tracey Britton, Michael Johnson, Joe Sturnick and/or me.

We are working hard to change our violent world and we will>>  MVP in ACTION!
