IDC 295 Democratization of Information Call for Faculty

Every two years Phi Theta Kappa announces an Honors Study Topic, an academic theme addressed at both the national and local level through scholarship and service. The Honors Institute, in conjunction with Phi Theta Kappa, is developing an interdisciplinary honors seminar addressing the 2010-2012 topic, “Democratization of Information:  Power, Peril and Promise”.

Faculty interested in learning more about the topic and the development of the interdisciplinary course are encouraged to attend an information session, Monday, November 23rd, in room 4-112. The course, as currently envisioned, will consist of three-hour instructional modules addressing different aspects of the topic, including communication, education, economics, public policy, history, science and the arts, all within a coherent framework. Faculty will have the opportunity to propose a module for inclusion in the course. No past Honors teaching experience is required to propose a module.

Faculty participants will work closely with Jodi Oriel, the Phi Theta Kappa advisor and Assistant Director of the Campus Center, in constructing the course, taking advantage of the numerous resources available through Phi Theta Kappa. A detailed program guide for the course, filled with instructional resources and ideas, will be available in January 2010. (The 2008-2010 topic was “The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences”. An example of the vast array of resources compiled for academic study of this topic is available at https://www.ptk.org/honors/guide/ .) Opportunities for student and faculty travel, guest speakers, and enrichment activities will be supported by both the Honors Institute and Phi Theta Kappa.

If you can’t make the information session, please feel free to contact either Paul D’Alessandris or Jodi Oriel.
