Moments of Silence Are Not Enough. Together We Can Stop Hate.

I write this message with a heavy heart that we have experienced yet another senseless loss of human lives in our country. While the motive in the shooting remains under investigation, the recent incident has only added more spotlight on the growing number of violent attacks targeting members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

Since the start of the pandemic last spring, Asian Americans have faced racist violence at a much higher rate than in previous years. The New York Police Department reported that hate crimes motivated by anti-Asian sentiment increased by 1,900% in New York City in 2020. And according to Stop AAPI Hate, there have been over 2,800 reports of anti-Asian violence between March 2020 and December 2020.

No longer is it enough to just share a moment of silence in memory of lives lost.  No longer is it acceptable to turn a blind eye to hate and divisiveness in our country. We must find a path forward that places a higher value on human existence than we are experiencing with the increase in visibility of hate groups that are more interested in embellishing our differences than they are in appreciating our similarities.

MCC stands in solidarity with members of our Asian community in saying hate has no place in creating a better tomorrow for us all.

If you are aware of or are the victim of any incidents of hatred or bigotry, please report it to MCC’s Office of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accountability (585-292-2122, diversity@monroecc.edu), or contact our Department of Public Safety at (585) 292-2911.

We are MCC and we are better for the diversity of students, faculty, and staff we represent.
