Record Number of AmeriCorps Members to Take Pledge Today

Following a service project this morning, a record number of over 100 Rochester
AmeriCorps members will recite the AmeriCorps pledge and be sworn in for a year
of service. The informal ceremony at the downtown United Presbyterian Church
will be followed by a luncheon and meeting with host site supervisors. Today's
activities are the culmination of two weeks of orientation and training for the
group.

Rochester AmeriCorps, currently in its ninth year of operation, places
participants in a wide variety of local organizations to address unmet
community needs. The overall focus of the program is public safety, with the
majority of the members involved in youth development and violence prevention
activities. AmeriCorps members serve on a full time basis in exchange for a
living allowance, health coverage, a child care subsidy, and specialized
training. Upon completion of the program, each receives an education award of
$4,725 for use in repaying student loans or going on in school.

Operated by MCC since its inception in 1994, Rochester AmeriCorps is located in
room 4081 of the Damon City Campus.
