Summer Hours at MCC - College to Close Early on Fridays Starting June 11

Together as a College community we celebrated our 2021 MCC graduates at the Commencement ceremony on May 20.  We honored our MCC employees and retirees at the Employee Recognition Ceremony on May 26.  As we enter summer 2021, our second summer in a global pandemic, MCC seeks to find ways to allow our dedicated employees an opportunity to rest and recharge in preparation for the academic year ahead.  With that goal in mind, we are announcing Summer Hours at MCC. Under the Summer Hours schedule, employees will work additional hours Monday – Thursday, so that the College may close early on Friday afternoons at 1:00 p.m.

Here is some general information to assist departments and individuals in planning:

  • The Summer Hours schedule (i.e., early closing on Fridays at 1:00 p.m.) will be in effect from June 11 – July 29.
  • Department heads are asked to work with employees to develop schedules that ensure students continue to have access to necessary services and resources, and departmental operations continue to run smoothly.
  • If your pay is based upon a 35-hour workweek (7 hours/day), from Monday - Thursday you will need to start your day earlier, end your day later, and/or shorten your lunch from 60 minutes to 30 minutes to work the additional 3.5 hours that would otherwise occur on Friday afternoon.  Similarly, if your pay is based upon a 40-hour workweek, from Monday - Thursday you will need to adjust your schedule to work the 4 hours that would normally occur on Friday afternoon.
  • For the Summer Hours schedule to be successful – that is, an opportunity for employees to rest, refresh, and (hopefully!) enjoy warm weather in Rochester, NY – departments and employees will need to communicate clearly and collaborate closely on a work schedule that ensures adequate coverage to meet student needs and departmental obligations.

Human Resources is working with bargaining unit leadership to address departmental and individual work scenarios that may not fit neatly into the Summer Hours schedule.  For example, departments where individuals have start/end times outside the 8:45 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. workday.  The intent is to collaborate to identify solutions to these scenarios so that these employees are able to benefit in some way from the Summer Hours schedule, without running afoul of Labor Law or collective bargaining agreement requirements.

For those with specific questions about how the Summer Hours schedule will impacts you given your particular role/responsibilities, shift start/end times, scheduling of lunches and breaks, previously approved vacation or sick time, etc. – please stay tuned!  Additional information will be shared next week in the Trib.  We invite you to think about any questions/concerns you may have and present them to your department head who will forward them to the respective Cabinet member.  Answers to frequently asked questions will be provided in the Trib next week.
