President's Wednesday Message

Although the National Endowment for the Arts reports that over 50% of visual artists are women, a survey of 18 large US art museums found only 13% of their collections were composed of works by women (Public Library of Sciences). During Women's History Month, the National Museum of Women in the Arts runs a social media campaign to raise awareness about women artists. Since 2016, more than 11,000 individuals and 1,000 organizations have participated in the campaign by posting and tagging a list of #5WomenArtists. My list this year included the following: Anni Albers, Andrya Flores, Hung Liu, Harriet Powers, and Amy Sherald.

Posting this month, I wondered about how such a hashtag would work in other fields where women are under-represented or largely unknown. There's sadly no shortage of such careers and academic disciplines.

What five women in your field should we all know about? Who would your--for example--#5WomenProgrammers, #5WomenComposers, #5WomenEconomists, or #5WomenCoaches be?

Please share your list in the comments or tweet it, tagging it with your specific #5Women hashtag and #5WomenWednesday so we can find your list. This month, help us all learn more about the accomplished women leaders in your academic or professional field.
