The Reinstatement of College Hour

As some of you may remember, the College used to have the noon hour on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays as College Hour during which classes were not offered. This time period allowed us to promote engagement in college events for both students and faculty, including event attendance, professional development opportunities, time for students to meet with clubs or classmates, time for faculty to meet together, and a variety of other types of activities.

The Faculty Senate shared a proposal to reinstate College Hour which was endorsed by College Administration as listed below. We ask for your assistance and cooperation in re-establishing this important tradition.

It is proposed that, commencing with the Fall 2018 semester (or as soon thereafter as is possible), Monroe Community College will recognize the (MWF noon-12:50pm) time period as "College Hour," with the accompanying specifics regarding policy and implementation:

  • Academic departments will agree not to schedule courses during this time period, except when:
    • A particular course cannot reasonably be offered in another time period, due to lack of instructor availability, lack of classroom or lab space, or other constraints that prevent a department from supporting a course offering at an alternative time;
    • A department, in consultation with their academic dean, deems the College Hour time period to be of unique significance to the ability of students to learn and succeed in a particular course.
  • All other offices (faculty, administrative, professional and support staff) across the College and at all campus locations agree not to sponsor or schedule activities during this time period which violate the spirit of "community togetherness" that this proposal seeks to build.

These guidelines apply to all campuses and MCC locations.
