Award for Service

David H. Day, Professor of Anthropology, was awarded a certificate of appreciation at a special ceremony at the Jewish Community Center on the evening of October 13. Sponsored by the Center for Holocaust Awareness and Information (CHAI) of the Jewish Community Federation., the event launched the newly-published memoir of local Holocaust survivor Angie Suss Paul, a popular speaker in area schools. Paul spoke poignantly about how she had never come forward to speak about her incarceration under the Nazis until she was personally invited, with  other Rochester-area survivors, by David Day, founding director of MCC's Holocaust-Genocide Studies Project in the mid-1980s, to participate in a massive "Auschwitz" Exhibition.

The exhibition was held in MCC's gym and and was the kickoff exhibit for the original project's  three-year run. Paul said she wanted Day to be remembered "…for encouraging the preservation of the collective memory" of Holocaust survivors. "His urging was the beginning opf my ability to speak out and share my life experiences, " she added.
