President's Wednesday Message

Today marks the mid-point in MCC's Veterans' Appreciation Week, sponsored by the Career and Veteran Services Office and the STARS (Supporting Transitioning and Returning Service members) Project. This morning at the Downtown Campus, you can join veterans for coffee and conversation from 10 to 11 in the second-floor student lounge; and over College Hour on the Brighton Campus, the STARS project presents a session on Military Culture and Transition to Civilian and Academic Culture. The week culminates in a Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday at the MCC Veterans Memorial. You can find the full schedule here.

The dedicated staff in the Veteran Services Office works every week of the year to welcome our student-veterans to MCC, assist them in obtaining the benefits they earned, connect them to counseling and transition services both at the College and in the community, help them identify academic programs and career pathways, and more. These inspiring colleagues have been recognized for their efforts at the local, state, and national level, and MCC's programming has served as a model for community colleges across the country.

Later this month, MCC will highlight the accomplishments of one of our inspiring student-veterans: an alumnus who found his first academic home at MCC, his second at Yale, and is now helping to lead economic development efforts at the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce. Adrian Hale is the first of seven remarkable MCC alumni who will be featured over the year on 13WHAM/Fox Rochester. Adrian's story underscores the positive impact our faculty and staff have on student-veterans, and equally important, the positive impact they have on our College and our community.

We owe a special debt of gratitude to our student- and employee-veterans. This week, please take a moment to reflect on their sacrifice and thank them for their service. (And, if you have a chance, thank our amazing Veteran Services team, too!) If you have words of gratitude you would like to share, please visit the blog.
