Acclaimed Poet to Read at MCC

Internationally-renowned poet Michael Waters will read his poetry in Monroe A, Warshof Conference Center, on Thursday, November 9, 7-8:30 pm. The event, sponsored by MCC’s Creative Arts Committee, is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the reading.

As Professor of English, Ph.D. at Salisbury State University, Maryland, Waters has received numerous awards for his work, including two much-coveted Puschart Prizes and several grants and fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts. The consummate traveler, he has guest lectured at countless universities throughout the United States and Europe, and has edited several editions of the much-praised anthology Contemporary American Poetry.

Waters will be reading poems from his 2001 volume, Parthenopi: New and Selected Poems, and generous portions from his 2006 book, Darling Vulgarity. This is a monumental volume insofar as it displays his technical, formal, and intellectual innovation. The poems reference and synthesize a stunning breadth of literary, cultural, botanical, biological, mythological, and political sources—and they routinely display Waters’s commitment to creative reading as well as writing.
