Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project Responds to Massacre at Tree of Life Synagogue

In response to the massacre that occurred at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill, Pa. on Oct. 27, the student leaders of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project (HGHRP) at Monroe Community College issue the following statement:

The Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project (HGHRP) at Monroe Community College unequivocally condemns the October 27 massacre of innocent Jewish people at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill, Pa. as an act of hate, antisemitism and religious intolerance. We mourn for those killed and injured and for all those who are threatened by religious and cultural discrimination. This act of intolerance is an act against all of us.

The lessons of the Holocaust, including Martin Niemöller's poem, "First They Came For The Jews," demonstrate the importance of collectively standing up against acts of hatred and intolerance or else humanity itself becomes at risk. The HGHRP joins those who educate, advocate and stand up against injustice so that our communities become fully inclusive.

The HGHRP invites the Rochester community to hear from historian James Waller Ph.D., author of "Confronting Evil: Engaging Our Responsibility to Prevent Genocide" (Oxford University Press, 2016), who will speak at the HGHRP's 27th annual Kristallnacht program at noon and 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 at MCC's Downtown and Brighton campuses respectively.
