Angelique Stevens Receives Long Walk Award

On Sunday, October 14th, 2018, Associate Professor of English Angelique Stevens was recognized for her longstanding work on behalf of Water for South Sudan, Inc. and was presented with the 3rd annual Long Walk Award. This award recognizes the recipient's longevity in working to further WFSS's mission. It is given annually to someone who demonstrates passion for the mission of WFSS and has worked to help further the WFSS mission, provided guidance to WFSS staff and/or leadership, personally given generously financially and/or of time and talent, and assisted WFSS in fundraising efforts by using his or her network to secure contributions. Stevens embodies these ideals through her many years of service to WFSS.

Stevens joined the Water for South Sudan Board of Directors in 2008. She has twice visited South Sudan, most recently in 2015, and was instrumental in helping the team in South Sudan develop a system for evaluating and monitoring wells. During her 2015 trip to South Sudan, Stevens and WFSS Country Director Lion Thiep evaluated 80 older wells. It was revisiting these wells that led to the operations team redesigning the cement platform around the wells and launching the rehabilitation team to rebuild and upgrade the platforms on older wells. Since 2017, the rehab team has upgraded 59 wells to the new standards. To date, Water for South Sudan has drilled 349 wells, which provide desperately needed fresh water to multiple villages. Once complete, each well pumps approximately 1,800 gallons of water per day and serves approximately 600 to 750 people. In addition, wells allow for the growth of education, health care, and local economies.

Stevens is also a member of MCC's Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project's Advisory Team. Please join us in congratulating her on being recognized for her human rights-related efforts!
